What is bridge and how does it work?

Perhaps you too must have heard about the bridge in Networking. Many will also know about it, but if it is not, then today we are going to know about it, what is this bridge after all? When building a road, a river has to be crossed by it, then in such places engineers build bridges. Such a bridge is constructed to connect the two site parts. Since no car or bus can cross by swimming in water, they need a bridge to go from one place to another.

At the same time, if we talk about computer networking, then a bridge also does the same thing. It is useful in connecting two or more local area networks (LANs) together. In this cars, or data (talk about network then), they use the bridge to go to different parts of the network.

These devices are also similar to the router, but they do not analyze the data that they forward. For this reason, bridges are very fast in terms of data trasferring, but they are not so versatile as a router. For example, a bridge cannot be used as a firewall like more routers do. A bridge can transfer data between different protocols (such as a Token Ring and Ethernet network) and operate in the "data link layer" or level 2 of the OSI model.

So today I thought why should you all be given complete information about what the bridge is and how it works so that you get to know about a very special device of networking subject. Then let's start without delay.

This bridge is a repeater that has such a functionality that it filters the content, for which it reads MAC addresses of both source and destination. They are used to interconnect two LANs that are operating in the same protocol. It has a single input and a single output port, which makes it a 2 port device. This device operates in the data link layer of the OSI Model.

These bridges are very helpful for filtering the data load of traffic, for which they divide them into segments or packets. They are used to reduce the traffic load of LAN or other networks. These bridges are actually passive devices, as there is no interaction between bridged and paths of bridging.

How does Network Bridges Work?

Let us now know how these network bridges work. Bridge devices inspects incoming network traffic and determines whether to forward packets or discard them, depending on their destination. An Ethernet bridge, for example, first inspects each incoming Ethernet frame including source and destination MAC addresses - sometimes frame size - when it is processing individual forwarding decisions.

This network bridge works in layer 2, which is the data link layer of the OSI model. It connects multiple network segments in this layer. Bridge not only broadcasts traffic from one network segment to another, but it also manages traffic simultaneously.
